LUCID

Edinburgh inter-disciplinary collective TH3ST3P presents the first instalment of a series of nights showcasing experimental live electronics and avant-garde art. At the helm on this occasion is Post-Punk/Synth legend SOFT RIOT with local support from feral hardware overlords KAOS MACHINE and dark dance vinyl sorcerer LUCID.

Renowned in the European underground synth/post-punk scene for his signature sound, Jack Duckworth aka SOFT RIOT showcases his unique approach to the “darkwave/synth” genre. Duckworth was a founding member of Canadian first-wave post-punk revivalists Radio Berlin (1998-2005) and A Luna Red (Gold Standard Labs, 1999-2003), with Soft Riot surfacing as a solo act in the early 2010s in London, England. Soft Riot has toured Europe numerous times, from Rennes, France all the way east to Moscow, Russia with selected performances in North America. and stages have been shared with peers such as Keluar, Linea Aspera, She Past Away, Section 25, Selofan, Drab Majesty, Lebanon Hanover, Front 242, Absolute Body Control and Robert Görl of Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft.

Soft Riot’s sound is an amalgamation of his personal experience with music, containing elements of synthesizer based film soundtracks, romantic Italo-Disco style flourishes and angular, psychedelic synth-pop all tied together with an underlying tension. It is a science-fiction tinged soundscape
that narrates the listener through today’s fractured, excessive landscape with hints of black humour.

KAOS MACHINE is a joint sonic onslaught of live hardware electronics wielded by Johnny Jay (Forever Alien/Digital Disaster/Secretion) and Keith Duncan (My Fiend). Modifying mechanical energy from a disordered state, using modern machinery to manipulate moving rhythms and ineffable vibrations they breathe life back into The Machine.
The wildness will electrify the room as it emanates from these strange men doing strange things with their strange machines.

On the decks before, betwixt and following the performances will be LUCID, the generalissimo of notorious Edinburgh Techno club night Powerhouse. A long standing force of nature within the local dance scene, he’ll be providing a mystic concoction of dark and trippy jive pulsations from every end of the spectrum – Psychotropic Techno, sleazy after-hour Acid bangers and razor sharp Electro to sweat drenched EBM/Industrial workouts and euphoric Darkwave jewels, taking the bar to where they never thought they wanted to go.

VISUAL ART

Series

THEURGY

This work is part of a collection of artworks called ‘Theurgy’ from Baal, an Italian artist who lives and works in Edinburgh UK. It draws inspiration from mystical themes and symbols, creating a visual language that echoes the allure and enigma of the magical realms. Theurgy, derived from the Greek words “theos” (divine) and “ergon” (work), refers to the practice of harnessing spiritual energies. These designs aim to evoke a sense of wonder and as a reflection of the hidden forces of the universe, trying to captivate the imagination of both curious and connoisseur, inviting viewers to experience a transcendent connection with the supernatural. Echoing the flowing lines of Art Nouveau these works want to enchant, inspire and ignite conversations and work as a portal between dream and reality.

THE TEMPLE IS BURNING

TH3ST3P is thrilled to present to you this new series of works from the Italian artist Baal. These artworks delve into the theme of spirituality in the modern western society, emphasising the crucial role we have in preserving and nurturing its flame. The works portray temples consumed by flames and floating mannequins symbolising the fading connection between humanity and spirituality. In our fast-paced and scientific world, spirituality often takes a backseat, overshadowed by the pursuit of material success and rational thinking. The intangible aspects of our existence, such as our connection to the divine, the search for meaning, and the appreciation of the mystical, are at risk of being forgotten. Let us reclaim the quest for knowledge that encompasses both the tangible and the intangible. Through art, rituals, and communal gatherings, we can foster a sense of transcendence and connection. ‘The Temple is Burning’ urges us to examine the state of our society and encourages us to take action.
